I enjoyed some fantastic views of local Long-eared Owls today, including this female (top) and male (below), which displayed after sunset, at a private site. 
 

More Waxwings

The Waxwings have increased to six in Peterborough. I made another visit at the weekend and enjoyed yet more fantastic views.

Mad March Marsh Harrier with Hare

 

Over the weekend, Amy and I set out in search of Short-eared Owls, but stumbled upon a fascinating encounter with a female Marsh Harrier instead. It appeared captivated by the local Hares, making an incredible spectacle to witness their interaction. Truly an ambitious hunt for the Marsh Harrier!

Mad as a March Hare

Yesterday was truly remarkable, filled with unforgettable encounters with our local wildlife. The early morning light cast a magical glow out on the Hares during my fenland drive, offering a breath-taking sight. It's incredible how abundant they were; this time of year sees the fields teeming with courting Hares, engaging in liviely chases and the occasional boxing - truly as 'mad as a march hare'!

Drinking Waxwings

Recently, I've been fascinated by a group of Waxwings in Peterborough. Their unique drinking habits, preferring puddles  after berries, have caught my attention. Even when faced with frozen puddles, they cleverly find ways to hydrate, showcasing their adaptability, finding water droplets in the trees. 

A Bright Evening

Another throwback to mark ten years since I visited Canada.

This time a smart drake Evening Grosbeak. We enjoyed point blank views of a big flock of these with Purple Finches at the Algonquin Park, visitor centre . Most of the park was closed due to the extreme snow and it was the coldest I have ever been at -21°C and wind chill of -30°C. These birds certainly brightened up their snowy environment.

Spent a little bit of time with Stangrond Waxwings over the weekend. This fantastic flock of five have attracted a steady stream of admirers. Their irregular appearances around here always makes them a treat to see.

Throwback to an unforgettable encounter with this stunning adult male Snowy Owl!

Ten years ago, during the winter of 2013/2014, I had the incredible opportunity to witness the unprecedented influx of these majestic birds into Canada. What was supposed to be a trip to Norway turned into an Arctic adventure in North America, and I couldn't have been happier with the switch!

With thousands of Snowy Owls gracing the Canadian landscape, every day was a new opportunity to witness their grace and beauty. Among the many birds we encountered, this adult male stood out with its pristine white plumage and mesmerizing eyes. It was truly a highlight of the trip and remains one of my favourite birding and photographic experiences to this day.
